  • Struck for Aelius Caesar during the reign of Emperor Hadrian.
  • Lucius Aelius Caesar was adopted by Emperor Hadrian in 136 CE as his intended successor, but Aelius died before he could take the throne.
  • Dating on Roman Alexandrian coins typically uses the emperor’s regnal year. In a rare departure from this standard, Aelius’ titles as tribune and consul (for the  second time) are used in the reverse legend for the date.
