Posthumous issue struck for Germanicus (died 19 CE) by Emperor Caligula at the Rome Mint, 37-41 CE.
Obverse: GERMANICVS / CAESAR, Germanicus standing in ornamented slow quadriga right, bare headed and cloaked, scepter surmounted by eagle in left hand
Reverse: SIGNIS-RECEPT / DEVICTIS-GERM, Germanicus advancing left, bare headed and cuirassed with tunic, with right hand raised in gesture of adlocutio, transverse aquila cradled in left arm; S-C across lower fields.

Germanicus, the father of Gaius, was enormously popular with the Roman masses for his good looks and wartime heroics. His untimely death only added to his legend. The grandson of Augustus' wife Livia, Germanicus was so named for his father Drusus's spectacular conquests in Germany during the second decade of Augustus' reign.
