  • Struck for Empress Faustina Jr (wife of Marcus Aurelius) at the Rome Mint from 156 to 175 CE.
  • Issued during her lifetime as Empress under her father Emperor Antoninus Pius.
  • RIC 1671, Approx. 26mm, 10.49g.
  • Faustina Jr was consecrated by Emperor Marcus Aurelius after her death 175 CE.  She died during a military campaign in the East in company with the Emperor.
  • An charming youthful portrait of the Empress in superb style.
  • Coin has dark brown patina, images taken with bright illumination to show the details. Coin should be viewed in that environment.

  • Pedigree: Ex. Thomas Walker (1980s) with his ticket.
  • Obverse: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, draped, diademed bust right with waved hair.
  • Reverse: SALVTI AVGVSTAE SC, Salus seated left feeding snake twined around altar.
  • Salus was the goddess of safety and welfare. Her temple on the Quirinal at Rome, dedicated in 302 BC, was the scene of an annual sacrifice on August 5.
